Administrivia: Mailing list, gateway, FTP
Posted in 1996
Folks, Here are several administrative news items of note with respect to the mailing list, newsgroup gateway, and FTP archives. 1. Duplicate messages to comp.databases.informix As those of you who read comp.databases.informix directly know, there have occasionally been multiple copies of an article posted to c.d.i, sometimes quite a few copies. :-( In most cases, this was the result of the way that the mailing list gateway software was set up to interact with the news posting utility here. This has been a difficult problem to track down, but I think I may now have an idea of the cause. I have made some changes to the gateway software to try to avoid more duplications. My apologies to people on the Usenet side of the gateway, but certain aspects of the situation were beyond my control. 2. E-Mail bounces coming back to posters I was recently alerted by several posters that e-mail bounces were coming back from a particular site to anyone who posted to the list or the newsgroup. That problem should also be fixed. Some sites seem to insist on sending e-mail bounces back to original message authors instead of to the list owner address no matter how I fiddle with message headers. I typically do *not* see such bounces unless I have posted something myself. If you are a frequent poster and begin seeing a particular kind of bounce coming from a site consistently, please send a copy of the bounce to informix-list-request@rmy.emory.edu. This address will usually point to me, but may not if I'm away. 3. FTP archives The FTP archive of Informix-related files at Emory University has been moved to a bigger and faster system. The archive host should be referenced as "ftp.mathcs.emory.edu". That name will be used from now on, even if the archive is moved again. The IP number for the new system is 128.140.2.212. A mirror of the archive resides at ftp.iiug.org (IP 128.117.71.100). In the long term, this archive will become the primary site for user-contributed Informix files, with ftp.mathcs.emory.edu becoming a mirror site. There had been some recent reports that some people were having trouble using the FTP e-mail service at ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com to obtain files from ftp.iiug.org. Mike Reetz <miker@iiug.org>, the IIUG sysadmin, tells me that those problems, which were cause by some DNS set-up quirks, should now be fixed. If you try ftpmail to ftp.iiug.org again and it still fails, please let Mike or me know.
