Thanks. > Rory, When you create a table in online you specify row or page level locking, It sounds like they may be doing page level locking which is the default for online. Row level locking may require more systems resources so there is a trade off. Also, look at the SET ISOLATION and SET LOCK MODE commands. These help you in tuning an application to work with locking.
