The "Success Stories" link off www.informix.com lists 25 IDS customer successs stories, all but a handful of which name the end-user. Away from the vendor site the prominent partners all name more. My own site (www.ardenta.com) lists 15 IDS customers (one of my competitiors recently thanked me at a Partner day and told me how helpful this info is!) (and is somewhat out of date, I could easily add another dozen acquired since); www.informixcity.com has success stories. One Point Soluations and Advanced Data Tools in the US both cite real customers in Case Studies. Oninit's website has a wealth of .. oh no, they don't seem to have any customers ;-) Anyway, the point is that there is plenty of evidence that IDS is alive in kicking in household name companies, at least here in England.

He knows that there are more than 100 customers. I know I can name about 100 or so here in the US without talking about Cisco or Motorola. (Moto really isn't a customer but an OEM that embeds IDS)

It is _nice_ that others sing about it, but IBM should be singing the loudest. Typically news and press releases help promote a product, such as those partner emails, developer emails, etc. Front page recognition on IBMs website is another place to see some real marketing for Informix.

I think we all understand that. But some things are getting lost, or rather overlooked. I pointed out that there are only 3, by my count, 3 IT specialists that have Informix background and/or are certified on IDS in the Central North Territory. (2 in Michigan, 1 in Chicago). Central North is (Western PA, OH, KY,IN,MI,IL,WI,MN and St Louis ) No one has bothered to challenge that statement. Now I didn't forget about Channels because the IT Specialist who covers Moto lives in FL and the other IT Specialist moved to TX) Sure I may have forgotten someone. Or they may have hired someone recently. But 3 in that entire territory? Can you say a lack of parity between IDS and DB2? Looking at the license revenue (distributed systems only), there should definitely be more coverage than that. The reason that this is important is that an IBM sales team will not promote nor "push" IDS sales unless there is someone local to the team that can cover the product. Those covering SMB and White Space have to routinely bring in a BP in order to sell IDS. That may not sound bad, however if IBM is leading the sale, IDS is going to be an option of last resort. IBM can't sell IDS. That's a simple fact. Not an opinion, a fact. How do you sell a product that you don't know? IDS as part of a solution? Whats the status of Lawson? SAP? ATG? and others? Is IBM gaining ground by promoting IDS in the partner world? Sure you hear about Cisco and Moto, but what about others? Now I'm not accusing IBM of doing *nothing*. Sure they are doing *something*. What exactly it is, is still a mystery to the rest of the world. You can do all the PR in the world, but when a customer asks a local rep about the product and the local rep can't talk about the product, all credibility goes out the window. But hey! What do I know? ;-)
