Sally, AKL problems are hard to get around. I've found that the best way to deal with them are: 1. Go to 7.X 2. See what's happening during the locks and do whatever you can to minimize the length of time the locks are held. 3. Look at using multiple tables to hold this updated data and merge them into the real tables when it is necessary/convenient. 4. Try row-level locking. You might play around with something I experimented with for a while. If you are getting problems with a lock on an adjacent key, why not try inserting dummy records after each real record ("after" meaning in key-order). That way each real record is surrounded by dummy records. An AKL on one real record will lock its adjacent dummy record, not another real record.
