Hi! Art has several times refered to changes in client to server communitation methods in different Informix releases. I think I know what the changes were, except of change from 5.04 to 5.05. Can somebody please explain? Regards, Dragi "Bonzi" Raos

The big difference is between Online versions < 6.x and >= 6.x. The big difference is between Online versions < 6.x and > >= 6.x. No, there WAS a "cleanup" of the 5.xx protocol that occurred between 5.04 and 5.05 (or was it 5.05 -> 5.06, anyway...). It was supposed to speed up 5.xx communications and was in a similar vein to the recent reduction in handshaking that went on between 7.24 and 7.30. However, there was a coding bug in the first releases of the post-change I-NET/ I-STAR that caused the backward compatibility to break in such a way that multi-server transactions originating on the later version server were 4-8X slower than the same transaction originating on the earlier version server. I know, we had to upgrade all sister servers at the same time to install the later version; and get bug fixes we needed; and I loath doing that (too scary). Apparently (pure speculation) the new code did not detect the older protocol use of the remote server if it originated the transaction only if it was the recipient of the connection and this triggered error correction and recovery code that slowed things to a crawl. That was fixed in later releases. Art S. Kagel
