In view update

Our application needs to do an in view update of the screen whenever certain parts of a database are being updated. I.e. a user may be viewing the contents of a table simultaneusly with an ongoing update of the same table. The user requirement says that the screen must be immidiately updated to reflect the contents of the database. I'd be interested in hearing of any suggestions about how to implement this. We want to do the programming in 4gl but do not hesitate in using C. Some scheme with signals might do.
