Using ifxclone to setup HDR
Posted in 2012
Nitin tried to use ifxclone (IDS 11.70.FC5, Solaris x86) to build an HDR secondary, but the target crashed with "SMX failed to create pipes for clone restore", "Snapshot instantiation failed" and a PANIC. Jacques Renaut suspected a connectivity/sqlhosts issue (ifxclone generates sqlhosts itself) and suggested opening a PMR. Nitin later got it working by using local copies of sqlhosts and onconfig, creating a standard/RSS clone. Madison Pruet confirmed there is no direct HDR-secondary option: promote the RSS with onmode -d primary / onmode -d secondary. The thread then drifts to Connection Manager advice (run at least two CM servers).

Hi,
I am trying to use ifxclone to setup the secondary.
I am using IDS 11.70 FC5 on solaris x86
Below is my command which I run on target (dba2), while dba1 is source
ifxclone -T -S dba1 -I 10.58.17.49 -P 50200 -t dba2 -i 10.58.17.50 -p 1591
Please note, I am using ontlitcp as this is Solaris but the entry it creates
on source for dba2 is
dba2 onsoctcp 10.58.17.50 1591
It fails with below message in target online log:

I haven't played around with ifxclone as of yet, but that error on the target
would seem to imply that it was having problems connecting back to the source.
Can you post what the sqlhosts file on the target machine looked like? (just
for note on solaris you can use either onsoctcp or ontlitcp both are valid)\\\\

Response:
Well ignore my previous post. Having now actually tried out ifxclone, the
sqlhosts file on the target should be getting generated by the command (I
guess you could take a look at what it made and make sure it makes sense).
With the little playing around I did, if I intentionally messed up the source
ip or port, it wouldn't connect so it would not even get to the point where it
tried to kick the oninit on the target off. So I'm not sure why smx is having
problems creating the connection. I'd probably suggest opening a pmr if you
have support so that somebody can look into this further if you haven't gotten
it working.

Thanks Jacques for your response. I also played a little more with it and finally was able to make it work with local copies of sqlhost and onconfig. It worked fine and I was able to create a standard copy and also a RSS copy, which I converted to Secondary. However, I dont know whether there is an option of directly creating a Secondary (instead of RSS). But I really like the feature as dont have to go thru the backup/scp/restore cycle. :-) regards, Nitin
An RSS server can be directly promoted to an HDR secondary by running t=
he
onmode -d primary and onmode -d secondary commands. Therefore we didn'=t
think that it was necessary to put in the code to directly go to HDR
secondary.

Thanks Madison, so what I did was correct. A big thanks to IBM for coming up with this feature. I am trying to setup Connection Manager in our environment for one production database server which has HDR and RSS. Is there any guidelines/best practices from IBM for setting up Connection Manager on Linux? We are investigating the use of Connection Manager to make the failover of a db from primary to secondary completely transparent to an application. regards, Nitin
