"better?" -- requiries an explanation of your priorities, existing bandwidths, and available resources... eg. if the total computer power of your server was available for your task at hand and your incoming network bandwidth was somewhat limited in comparison to your disk i/o bandwidth, then you could easily overlap the processing of aggregating-on-the-fly with the time awaiting incoming network traffic, with a negligible effect (if any) on throughput. i always think it's interesting when certain initial constraints are drawn as cast-in-stone... eg. "This data needs to be stored in the database as is." -- which immediately begs a question, "Why?" (not that it matters!) especially since your question is largely generic and not specific to any given type of database... in AP/D3, i would simply apply "bridge-correlatives" to the appropriate fields and let the system automatically consolidate the summary info on the fly.
