Where is Informix with mobile databases?
Posted in 1998
I had a conversation with Dan Leighton (exec director server product marketing) at the UK Informix User Conference (Infuse) yesterday. It seems Informix does not know what to do about mobile computing. That's the market Lotus Notes addresses: occasionally-connected "databases". Apparently the engineers see problems (agreed, there are plenty, eg constraint violations on replication) and want a perfect solution. This would take time. I am told there are third-party solutions available now. Does anyone agree with me that a small single-user relational database that could work on a palmtop or laptop and replicate with a server would be useful? Could the under-marketed SE do this? In an ideal world we would all be connected with huge bandwidth over reliable connections and this problem would not exist. In the real world, Lotus Notes answers a real need. Unfortunately, it has almost no relational database capabilities worth the name. I spy an opportunity. My company has a need for such a technology. Anyone else? Could it be client...server instead of client/server? I know IBM's DB2 claims to do this but my requests for information about it and some example users have not yet been answered... Microbug's offering does something apparently not very much use. Someone else, I forget who, has SQL-Anywhere. -- Peter Lancashire Information Systems Specialist, Bayer plc Eastern Way, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP32 7AH, UK Tel: +44-1635-562258, Fax: +44-1635-562281 Mail: Peter.Lancashire.PL1@bayer.co.uk --- My Internet plumbing does not allow me to mail and post news together.
