ODS 7.23 executing procedure from trigger

Can anyone see anything wrong with this scenario ? tab1 has an update trigger ON cols x,y,z which passes the column values q,x,y,z into a procedure P. P returns a value INTO column q. P calls other procedures which update tab2 and tab3 respectively. The trigger executes it's procedure successfully but fails with a -747 "Table or column matches object referenced in triggering statement" error message. Any ideas?
