If I remember correctly, running an ontape -c to a remote drive is a
bad thing, according to the Informix ODS Archive & Backup guide.
Since the logs are somewhat important, you might want to call Informix
support on this one.
I'm using "/dev/rmt/0c" on our Sun box with an 8mm drive.
