Informix and oracle in the same box
Posted in 2011
Frank asked whether installing Oracle 11gR2 alongside a busy IDS 11.50.FC8 instance on Red Hat Linux would cause conflicts, given Oracle would see little activity. Respondents said there are no inherent conflicts, but advised: use different TCP/IP ports for each listener, ensure enough memory for both and avoid overlapping/shared memory segment keys (capping Informix memory if needed), and watch CPU contention. Art Kagel added that Oracle is a resource hog and could degrade Informix performance. No problem report or further follow-up beyond this advice.

Hi, Guys, Because of the support requirement of one of our software , we are going to install Oracle in our current busy Informix box. The Oracle database will be used only for CM purpose ( so, not much daily activity at all). The question is, Are there any conflicts when we install and run both Informix and Oracle in the same box/host? Thanks, Frank --00151747b2865a9d8404ae2b9446

Hi Frank. There´s no problem, since you have enough memory available (remaining for Oracle, of course). You could limit Informix maximum memory, and map its maximum used area. Check for their documentation, and make sure both systems do not access the same memory areas. Regards. Good remembering, Celso! Except for this 2 recommendations, I don´t see any troubles (cpu of course will require attention). Both will lock up segments of SHM even though Oracle won't be doing much work? Any database engine will require memory segments, I mean. Just make sure both will not share any of them, and you´ll be safe.... Thanks Alex and Celso! We can control the ports assignment, no problem. Alex mentioned The two databases may access the same memory area? Mess up each other possibly? I assume the OS will take care of the memory boundary for each process, right or ....?
