Michael If you specify a column value of 0 (or dont specify it in the list of columns you are inserting to), then the serial column will be populated with an "auto-number". If you specify the value of the serial column in your insert statement, it will be used. I dont know what will happen if you decide to enter the same value again and again, but in my case, most serial fields in the database are also primary keys with a unique index so thats not a possibility for me.
