You do not need the Universal Server to do data warehousing with this tool, you don't even need to use Informix databases. Informix purchased the company that built the tool this year. Due to this the next release of Metacube, due in July/August I believe, will have more facilities some of which are designed to make much greater use of the specific capabilities of the Online engine. Also Informix are working on building a Metacube datablade that will tightly integrate the Metacube functionality with the Universal Server. I have no idea when that is due out but probably sometime Q1/Q2 next year. I believe that Metacube is also one of the many tools being used against the MCI terabyte range data warehouse that is running on Informix XPS Online but I'm not entirely certain about that.
