Help in emulating an Informix form
Posted in 1995
Hello All, I am trying to find out if someone has attempted to implement their own screen handling mechanism, instead of using the Informix forms...perhaps using the curses library and ESQL/C code. The problem we face is described below. Please excuse the length. In our project, we use the Online 7.1 engine with C4GL 6.01, the machine (I think), is an HP50 running HPUX 9.X. The access to the database is from Wyse50 terminals over a WAN. At certain times during the day, there are > 100 users doing intensive data entry. 90% of them use the same form. The form has about 20 fields, mostly of type CHAR. The problem the users face is the "TYPE AHEAD" phenomenon, that we suspect is caused by the following: Since the application uses attributes such as "UPPERCASE", each character the user types has to travel all the way to the application server, get processed and then sent back to the terminal to be echoed. The local echo is turned off. Over a WAN, this traffic results in a > 10 character "type ahead" at times. This bothers the users since the next field they go to depends on the input to the previous field, so they have to wait for the screen to catch up. The server is not stressed out at those times. There is no runaway process hogging resources. So we think its the traffic. We would like to see if we could write this one form on our own. That way we can use local echo and perhaps reduce some traffic on the WAN. Informix does not provide any libraries that help in this matter. I was hoping that someone out there might have run into this problem and might want to share some thoughts on the solution. Thank you for your patience and help.
