I don't know of any performance penalties of the table(...). (in any
case, should be negligible)
If you want to create a dual table equivalent, then consider this
cut&paste from SQL*Plus:
SQL> desc dual
Name Null? Type
----------------------------------------- --------
----------------------------
DUMMY VARCHAR2(1)
SQL> select dummy from dual;
DUMMY
-----
X
SQL>
So, to emulate the dual table in informix with a view as good as
possible, the view should look like:
create view dual(*dummy*) as
select *'X'::varchar(1)*
from table(set{1});
PS: If you have an Oracle guy starting next week, then -- i know this
quite well because /i am myself mainly an oracle guy/ -- it is most
important to tell him the significant differences between Oracle and
Informix in the area of isolation levels, locks and multiversioning
(which does /not /exist in Informix).

I'd have to learn it myself. When I used Oracle I wasn't a DBA and it was a long time ago. I'll bring it up so that when he is learning Informix he can keep a look out for it. Thanks, Michael
