So, if I have just one instance of Informix runing on a host
then all these names can point to the same name, the hostname ?

Thanh,
in "Informix speak", a "server" is an instance of an Informix database
engine running on a specific machine, called the "host".
"DBSERVERNAME" is the name of the server. It is an entry in the
"onconfig" configuration file which uniquely names an instance on
this host. Under "DBSERVERALIASES" you can give your instance
one or more alias names, which are needed if your instance can be
reached via different protocols, e.g. shared memory and tcp/ip.
For each entry in "DBSERVERNAME" and "DBSERVERALIASES", there
must be a corresponding entry in the "sqlhosts" file which
specifies which server can be reached on which host via which
protocol.
The "hostname" is one of the parameters in the "sqlhosts" file. It
specifies the network name of the machine the engine is running
on. You really should read up on this file in the manual.
The "INFORMIXSERVER" environment variable is used to specify which
engine the frontends should actually use. This is used to lookup the
parameters for engine access in the "sqlhosts" file.
Hope this helps,
Richard

Umm, the quick and dirty answer is yes. I'd qualify that by saying you
probably should not have the servername the same as the hostname just
because you will start to hardcode the servername, as bad as that is, in
your code here and there and if one day you mode that server to another host
you will then not feel compelled to rename the server thereby causing jobs
to fail mysteriously. Similarly if you need to bring up a second server
instance on that host your naming scheme is blown also. I prefer to name
server instances after the set of databases that they serve.

Richard and The Clown,
Thanks for taking the time to explain.
It does help.
