We have essentially biased some of our machines toward OLTP activity, and others toward batch activity. Our Symix database is split into four physical databases on four machines (soon to become six), with two machines oriented to OLTP and two to batch/long queries. A substantial batch schedule allows much of this to be done at night/on weekends.
