In the current installation of INFORMIX-Universal Server Version 9.12.UC2 i noticed there are a few things missing, including no 4gl, no ace. esql is there however. I want to add 4gl but since I don't want to mess up any previous files or overwrite anything, i am shy of doing it outright without some advice ( free advice...) got some? it it simply as root ( or informix) install from a menu item on the CD?

Ed all Informix software must be installed so that the package with the latest version number is installed last. The latest 4GL is 7.20, I believe though 7.30 is around the corner, therefore you will have to re-install your UDO and ESQL/C after installing 4GL or the message files, at least, will become unusable. Your config files should be saved, if you are using the onconfig.std instead of another name for the ONCONFIG file you should make a copy until the installations are complete. Same with the sqlhosts file which few of us name differently, make a copy. Also just to be pedantic the engine will have to be offline while you are doing this. Other than these items it should be painless. Personally I do not trust installation menus but you may not have any choice. Art S. Kagel
