I like to to the following:
update statistics low for <table> (<columns>);
-- where <columns> are all columns that are in an index
update statistics medium for <table> (<columns>) distributions only;
-- where <columns> are all columns of a table that do not appear
-- in the next update statistics high statement
update statistics high for <table> (<columns>) distributions only;
-- where <columns> are columns that head indexes or columns that are
-- the first differing column of composite indexes that start with the same
-- subset of columns and optionally columns frequently used to join two tables
Enable PDQPRIORITY and export PSORT_NPROCS to something reasonable for
improved performance.
Bonus: The statements can be run in parallel.
If you want to make life easy on yourself, get Art Kagel's dostats utility
from iiug.org.

Read 2 documents: The Informix Performance Guide and John Miller III's white paper about the latest internal optimizations to the update statistics processing inside the engine in later releases (you have an optimized version). John's paper is at: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/db2/zones/informix/library/techarticle/miller/ 0203miller.html Or, as someone suggested, you can just get my dostats utility which implements these protocols with many configuration options. Dostats is contained in the package utils2_ak available for download in the IIUG Software Repository. Art S.
