I presume you mean recovery mode.

I don't see why not. We used to have a large customer here (well, we
still do) who wanted a hot backup with OnLine 4.1. They used to use
tbtape to do the archive and restore onto a second machine. The second
machine was then left in recovery mode, having log tapes restored as
soon as they were backed up on the primary server. As you say, if the
primary went down, they restored all new log tapes and then told tbtape
there were no more, and went online.

I'm not sure what happened if the secondary machine goes down in the
middle of the restore. But I guess you just start again with the latest
archive.
