migrating ids 10.00.UC10 to 11.50.FC6 (64-bit)

I'm going to face the following challenge:=20
Have to migrate an 10.00.UC instance with 39 databases, 17 dbspaces, 95=20
chunks, 224 GB to 11.50.FC.
Unfortunately the layout of dbspaces is poor and table extents need to be=20
optimized.
Therefore I'd prefer a non in-place migration, but outage has to be less=20
than 8h.
Data movement utilities as mentioned in the Migration Guide=20
(dbexport/dbimport, HPL, distributed queries) will probably not meet the=20
aims.
So what about replication?
Is it possible to bring up a well laid-out new server, create the=20
databases from optimized dbschemata, replicate data while work is going on=
=20
and then switch to the new server??
Please let me know.
os is aix.
Thank you.

Take a look in the member area on iiug.org, conference cownloads,
conference 2009.
The presentation is named "D16_Privett_Upgrade_to_11.50_with_ER.pdf",
held by Ron Privett.
May be it can give you a first idea.

Absolutely! You can use Enterprise Replication (ER) to replicate your data
onto the new server and keep it in sync until the switchover. After
switchover you can even keep the older version up-to-date for a time until
you are comfortable that the new database is operating correctly with your
applications in case you have to fall back to 10.00.

The only issue you might encounter is that to use ER each table being
replicated must have a primary key defined. So depending on the
original design and set up of your databases you could have quite a
bit of preliminary work to identify and define unique indexes and then
primary keys, and ensure thay don't break your applications. Also ER
at these versions require some additional sbspaces. Finally you were
talking about an in-place migration which implies upgrading on a
single server, ER relies on TCP connectivity between the servers so
you will need to define TCP NETTYPES if you are not already using
them.

Hello,
you can do a testrun of the distributed query migration scenario (without
stopping production):
Install and configure the new server, create tables (raw, without
indices/constraints). You can do that easily from dbschema outputs.
Copy table data an measure runtimes (in parallel, large tables with own
processes). Create indices/constraints with PDQ afterwards.
Runtime will probably depend on the performance of the old server.
Watch out for single large tables - they might determine the total runtime!
Check, if you can migrate parts of the data in advance (or later on) -
historical data etc.) ?
Give it a try. If you can't meet your downtime requirements , you can use that
at least as a test for performance and quality of the new
hardware/configuration/layout.

Andreas
