Another possibility is to create a demon that reads a "command" table that you create in the database. Each record (which can be inserted from the pc) represents some command to execute. You can be quite elaborate in how faithful a command execution environment you give to the command. For example, if the demon is running as root, you might do a a setgid/setuid to a particular user as represented in the record, change directory to that user's home directory, execute their shell, save the output in another table, etc. I implemented this mechanism as well as a print spooler using the same technique. The motivation was a network limitation that only gave me one channel to the host machine which was taken up by Informix. So I had to do everything using that one channel. Scott
