As another poster said: try sending SIGPIPE. Often that works after a while. Another possibility is to suspend it (send SIGSTOP, kill -STOP) and check with tbstat -u to see if it is in a critical section (3rd field under 'flags' different from 'X') and tbstat -s to see if it holds any latches. If both are false, you may be able to stop it with SIGKILL without the engine going down. Otherwise, you send SIGCONT, and another SIGSTOP, then check again. This is a last resort.
