Thanks to everybody who responded to my problem. I was able to issue the 'delete from systables where tabname = "syslog"' command as user informix, but only after granting dba privileges to user informix and setting the UNIX file access privileges so that everybody could read/ write the appropriate files/directories. That's the problem with SE: It is not only dependent on its own user authorization, but also on the UNIX file system. One more advantage of Online.
