HELP! Upgrade to V10
Posted in 2007
Keith Simmons reported badly degraded performance after migrating from IDS 7.31FD6 to IDS 10.00FC5 on Solaris 5.8, asking whether synonyms pointing to a remote server over a 100Mb LAN should be dropped and recreated. Respondents doubted the synonyms were to blame and suggested isolating slow SQL with SET EXPLAIN, checking for sequential scans, CPU and I/O versus the old server, reviewing OPTCOMPIND, and redoing statistics properly (e.g. dropping distributions first or using a tool like dostats). No resolution is recorded in the thread.

Was IDS7.31 FD6 on Solaris 5.8, upgraded to IDS 10 FC5. Followed the migration guide and have updated stats. Performance stinks. The database has many synonyms to a remote server, the link is LAN (100 Mbs), the migration guide didn't mention synonyms specifically, any view on whether it is worth dropping/recreating them?? Any other thoughts on this migration? I need help quickly!! Keith
Assume you have a test system so you can have a look there with V 7.
Just a few thoughts....
find / identify what is slow.
does oninit eat a lot of cpu?? compared to V7-->> search for seq
scans???
what is/was optcompind set to???
how does your i/o look like compared to V7
try to isolate sql and run it with explain on to see if a query path
is wrong....
maybe then you need to have Arts dostats??? or dono...

it would really suprise me if that would help....

Also you have to get an AIX patch otherswise IDS will just stop accepting connections after a while. You should use an IBM Premier Business Partner who knows Informix backwards .. ;-)

Have you performed "update statistics drop distributions" before
rebuilding the distributions?
What is your update statistics strategy? (i.e. simple "update
statistics" to complex "do_stats")?
