Guide to indexing tables

Is there a resource out there that provides guidelines for indexing database tables? If if helps, I am working with a 4.0 Standard engine database. I could also provide more specific details about table columns and such, but I am looking for a more detailed guide than the Informix manuals provide. Thanks! -- John C.
