Then when they needed SQL access, they installed SE and manually created and mapped tables to the C-ISAM files. I think the problem with doing anything that updated the system tables was it could cause these links to be broken. However, AFAIK (I have only ever seen Tetra/Chameleon briefly, so am far from knowledgeable) from C2000 they started using ESQL/C instead of C-ISAM and could therefore use any Informix database server. So if you are using "real" (not C-ISAM) Informix database storage then I would agree that UPDATE STATS should be run. With some of these in-house rules, they are often followed religiously without any knowledge of why they were originally required.
