Yes I have had experience in the past working for a software house writing accounts packages, payroll etc.
I have found Informix 4gl to be excellent for this type of work. One important concept that i4gl has is Transaction Processing.
However I had to write a number rouding function because this was missing from the informix functions.
You can use the SERIAL field in informix to generate a unique number upon inserting a record into a table. You can then find out the number just generated
and then use this as to join any other tables of information to your project.
See example code below:
DEFINE p_proj_no INTEGER # Must be an INTEGER to hold a SERIAL value.
CREATE TABLE project
( proj_no SERIAL,
proj_desc CHAR(30),
etc..
);
## Note inserting a zero causes the next number to be used.
INSERT INTO project VALUES (0, "The project name", etc..);
## Pickup the last serial generated in the last INSERT.
LET p_proj_no = SQLCA.SQLERRD[2]
