Re: 7.2 talking to 8.2

I'm sure this thread is getting old, but I'm still a little surprised by
what Minek said.
Network connectivity to 8.x engines is certainly available, but direct
engine to engine connectivity through SQL is not supported either to or from
8.x.

I agree the term Istar is a bit ambiguous, but Informix themselves uses the
term to refer to remote queries.
When you attempt to do remote server access (i.e. dbname@server:table) from
8.2 you get an error -999 Feature not yet implemented. Remote access(ISTAR).

Minek said that access to 8.2 from a stored proc running in 7.2 worked.
Since the "connect" SQL statement doesn't appear to be available in SPL the
only way to do this would be with a remote server reference in a select
statement.
I tried this from 7.23 to 8.21 both from a stored proc and straight from
dbaccess. In both cases the session hung. And to make matters worse it
eventually crashed the 7.2 engine when I attempted to kill the session.
This is consistent with my knowledge of 8.x.

Minek may have only successfully done this from one 7.2 engine to another
7.2 engine, and may just be hypothesizing that it would work when pointed to
an 8.2 engine, I can't be sure. But as I said, it won't work until at least
8.4 (unless there is some undocumented magic that I'm unaware of).
