Informix relies upon the link name for the chunk paths, and you can't get away from the fact that these have to be unique. What you suggest would allow the user to start one instance in two different modes; in each mode the physical disk areas being accessed would be different. But that doesn't achieve the objective of being able to run production and QA instances concurrently. Neil
