Expanding on Art's expansion on David's suggestion: A quick-and-dirty way I used to use to defragment tables was to do an ALTER TABLE NEXT SIZE to set the next extent size sufficiently high, and then do ALTER INDEX <pick-an-index> TO CLUSTER. Be warned, though, that this method will lock the table for the duration of the operation, and will chew up TONS of log space, but it's probably the easiest method I know of. When done, you might want to do an ALTER INDEX TO NOT CLUSTER, although this isn't necessary, because Informix doesn't maintain clustering anyway. - Thomas J.
