sperform,sunos,istrip

Hy Folks, perhaps Y have an answer to this problem. We have a Sparc running SunOs 4.1.2 and Informix 4.10. Unfortunately sperform is setting "stty istrip" so its imposible to enter german "umlaute". It's possible to see such characters if they are in the db. But if I enter them they would be stript to 7 bit :-( Informix Hotline has noted a case (17738) but has no answer.
