The book I used when I first started out was "Using Informix-SQL" by Jonathan Leffler (who incidentally now works for Informix, and reads this list - Hi Jon!). I found this very useful, as it deals with all the basic stuff first, then goes on to introduce more complex aspects later. (ie it is NOT written like a manual). Another possibility is "Informix-SQL" by Tony Lacy-Thompson, which on first impressions looks similar. Good luck with the learning curve!
