We did this also, recently.

We intentionally used this behavior (intentionally did not use -ss) to
implement the storage strategy we first saw recommended by O. That would be
the S.A.M.E. (Stripe and Miror Everything)., which advocates putting
EVERYTHING in one huge RAID10 space.
There are too many changes happening at once to know which, if any, were the
single dominating contributor to performance (we added RAM, RAID, upgraded
OS, upgraded IDS, changed storage layout, new machine, new tuning [thanks to
suggestions here at cdi-- thank you Art & others]), but we are seeing
performance improvement of about a factor of 30 (reports that formerly took
several minutes to run now take only several seconds).
We wanted to down the system only once, and after using a development
machine to verify our plan, we did it in one fell swoop. Used a
minute-by-minute, written plan detailing who was doing what and when.
