With MODE ANSI, you have unbuffered logging and you are always in a transaction. You COMMIT or ROLLBACK, and you're automatically put into a new transaction. With standard logging, you have to explicitly say BEGIN WORK to open a transaction. Unbuffered logging means that the log buffer gets flushed to disk immediately on COMMIT or ROLLBACK. Buffered logging means that only full log buffers get flushed to disk. Checkpoints will also flush log buffers.
