Depends upon the OS and version but basically true. e,g, early version of HP-UX the /dev/r.. file DOES include the partition table/disk label. Later versions (and depends upon if a LVM is used/ which LVM is used) the /dev/r.. file DOES NOT include the partition table/disk label. These are stored at the start of the disk and vary in size depending upon UNIX type (HP-UX,Solaris,SCO,OSF/1) and OS version (Sorlaris 2.4 uses 4K, Solaris 2.5.1 uses 8K!, source Informix UK Technical Support) >> > >> > In article <6kg0d8$1ic$1@camel15.mindspring.com>, >> > > >> > > >zep@wcg.net (Zep) wrote: >> > > > I have a friend who's running sparc 450(s) with solaris 2.5.1 >(almost >> > > >no patches installed) and he's says partition tables disappear for no >> > > >apparent reason(!?) If anyone has any similar experiences, or could Correct. If you overwrite the first 8K of the disk you lose the partition label/disk label and the disk becomes inaccessible. Of course this is usualy cached in UNIX disk buffers. Writing to /dev/r... does NOT update the UNIX disk buffers. Since UNIX has it in the cache it does not notice the change and since the cached copy has not been written to, it does not get flushed back to disk when you shutdown. Hence when you startup after the a reboot, the modified area is read from disk and BOOM! you cannot access any filesystems on that disk! The best bit is that Online keeps working since it does not need a partition table! I always skip the first 50K-100K of the disk. I choose a value which makes the chunk size a multiple of 100K i.e. the last two digits of the chunk size are 00. >point >> > > >me to some resources, I would appreciate it. Many thanks.
