Where is informix in IBM now?
Posted in 2009
A returning user asked where Informix sits inside IBM, whether IBM intends to fold it into DB2, and why the downloadable version is time-limited. Replies said Informix belongs to IBM's Information Management division, that plans to merge it into DB2 were dropped years ago (evidenced by the 9.40, 10.00, 11.10 and 11.50 releases), and that a non-expiring Developer Edition (single CPU VP, limited memory) is available via the IIUG members' download page. Others noted technology sharing between DB2 and IDS, a multi-year roadmap and renewed marketing, so the poster's concerns were addressed.

Hi All, Just want to post this question: 1. Where is informix DB in IBM organization now? 2. Are they planning to port everything to DB2? 3. I've seen some latest version in IBM website and it's downloadable but for 3 months use only. I'm worried as i've been using informix for around 10 years or so and for me it's the best engine so far. So, if you have some insider from IBM org, please post it here. Hope informix will stay. Regards to all informix users in iiug.

Were you expecting them to give it to you for free for ever? > I'm worried as i've been using informix for around 10 years or so and for me > it's the best engine so far. Why does that worry you. > So, if you have some insider from IBM org, please post it here. Hope informix > will stay. From what I've seen, nobody in IBM knows as much as Gumby, even though he left IBM years ago. I'm sure he'll be along in a minute to tell you the real story. -- Cheers, Obnoxio The Clown http://obotheclown.blogspot.com -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by OpenProtect(http://www.openprotect.com), and is believed to be clean.
We'll, thanks for the prompt reply. I did ask these questions as i've seen some companies migrating from informix to other DB. I've read the same post but it is dated way back 2003, so i'm refreshing the same question. With regards to 3 months trial period - it doesn't matter actually to me.

Hello Jack, I recently attainded one of the IDS Bootcamps held in my city(first of its kind) and learned that IBM Information Management has a clear Road Map Ahead for ATLEAST next 5 years and I'm sure there is no looking back for Informix !! Mr Kagel gave you all the facts about the strong presence of Informix and it is very true that Informix customers always stay with Informix, they are big and good in numbers. Also recent efforts to market Informix is visble (Road shows, Bootcamps, New certifications, University sessions, Better Documentation, Conferences, Blogs, community events....) Yes, even i have seen a couple of migrations to another database but then they were due to SAP application requirements and no one was happy. Just once question i would like an answer for: How many NEW customers are being added to the Informix portfolio on quartely/yearly basis (few eyebrows raised on me by now)? may be confidential matter to disclose the number but I am hoping for a positive reply here...:) Regards Vikas ******************************************************************************* Where have you been for the last 9 years Jack? I *think* that was in 2008, but I can't be sure. -- Cheers, Obnoxio The Clown http://obotheclown.blogspot.com -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by OpenProtect(http://www.openprotect.com), and is believed to be clean.

My understanding that the multi-lingual stuff now called GLS was extracted from DB2 and put into IDS. This is quite understandable because over the years, IBM has done a lot in the Internationalisation field. I've also heard that the replication stuff from IDS has been ported or at least inspired the replication architecture in DB2. No doubt there's a lot more I don't know about.
Thanks a lot for providing some good information on this thread... We'll just to answer the question "Where I did i go on the last 9 years"... I transferred into 3 companies during those years. These companies, were using other DB. I did return to informix DB a couple of months ago that's why i'm trying to learn the new/old features of Informix 9.4 - 11.x, The last time i did is maintenance on 7.3, then a fresh install of 9.4. That's all i've done for the last 9 years. I want to be active again in Informix DB Admin and it's my pleasure to be back.
You are right. As far as I remember what a member from the R&D team explained recently, the compression comes from DB2. The fact that IBM sold U2 to Rocket software shows also their goal to focus more on IDS and DB2. 2009/10/21 Andrew Clarke <aclarke@civica.com.au> > > Art S. Kagel wrote: > > > > > 2. Hi Art, Thank you for your explanation and enlightenment. I'm from Manila, and i guess the companies i'm mentioning is not as big as what you have mentioned. The last time i attended the Informix forum was long way back (2001). The last time i installed is in an international manufacturing company which will be used for the Asia Pacific region. Thanks a lot.
