Using Visual Basic V3.0 Prof for front end
Posted in 1994
I've heard that I can write front end apps using Visual Basic and an ODBC interface for Informix backend. I have a Sun SparcStation2 running SunOS 4.1.3 and ONLINE 5.02c. All the client systems are PCs running MSDOS6.2 and Windows 3.1 I been spending the weekend learning Visual Basic, and although I'm new to basic (at least since Commodore 64 eight years ago), I think I'm ready to explore writing some not-to-complex front end applications. What I'm looking for is writing and maintaining front-end apps to enter accounting/payroll information. I've begun creating most of the tables in ONLINE, but 4GL doesn't quite cut it for me. I've heard programs like SQL-retriever from Visionware is all I need as the ODBC interface on each PC (plus PCNFS5.0 or FTP2.2). IF anyone can lend some views of their experience using visual basic and an ODBC driver to talk to ONLINE, I'd be extremely appreciative. If there are other 3rd party ODBC software other than SQL-retriever I'd be interesting in hearing (email, not post, please if vendor). I'd also like to get a simple app that someone has written which may simply allow a user to add/update/delete a record in one table, to get me started. BTW, I've found "Teach Yourself Visual Basic 3.0 in 21 Days" from SAMS Publ. to be a very good book. I've zipped through the first two chapters this morning alone, and feel I've retained most everything so far. Good val for $30 Thanks. be weary of my reply addr if it has uucp in it, see .sig. -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Joseph P.
