Is there away - ontape question
Posted in 2010
A DBA (IDS 11.50 on HP-UX) had two tapes labelled for the same day and needed to tell which held the real ontape -s -L 0 level-0 archive, noting ontape has no option to just dump header info. Replies: either read the tape with dd (piping through strings) to see the header, or start a restore with ontape -r, which prints the archive header and chunk details before prompting to continue — answer 'no' to avoid actually restoring. The poster accepted the restore-prompt approach.

As always when someone 'helps me' with our tape rotation I have mess to clean
up.
It seems there was a mix up a few weeks ago on tapes we use to do our database
backups and now I have 2 tapes labeled as the backup for the same day. I know
one has the ontape -s - L 0 backup for that day and one is empty or very very
old backup, but don't know which is which.
I didn't see an ontape option to just give me header information like when the
archive was done.
What is the best way to figure out which tape is which?
If this wasn't the tape we keep for 12 months as the monthly backup I would
let the normal rotation clear things up.

You dd the tape and look at the header or start a restore which will print
the header and chunk detail and ask if you want to continue.

Dd from the tape, pipe to strings and you'll see what you need
Cheers

There are a couple of ways to figure this out.
Use "dd" command like Art recommended or perhaps you can try followings:
1. put the tape in the drive
2. type ontape -r, this will display backup information of the tape
*WARNING!! do not say yes to continue the restore but type n or no.
