esql linking problems

This may be a stupid question and I have just started using informix but when I try to compile one of the demo files given with informix 4.0 (demo1.ec), I get a linking error. esql/c and cc both work fine but ld gives me: ld fatal: fail to read string table of file /usr/informix/lib/libsql4.a Any ideas.
