Measuring Online activity per user?
Posted in 1996
A client needs to somehow measure or estimate online activity by individual user. This company serves a group of other companies with a centralized database and needs to charge them based on their activity. They are using Online 7.11 which, like all Online versions from 6.0 onward, consists of processes that are independent of user processes. Therefore, measuring user process activity (using some unix tools) does not account for Online activity, which is about 90% of the total cpu usage. So how can we break down Online acitivity per user? Has anyone attacked this problem yet (or is the centralized server model so outdated)? Possible measurement units can be: - CPU seconds, though I doubt this will be possible. - I/O counts. Online keeps track of this kind of information while a user is connected, but loses it when a user disconnects. If no one has dealt with this before, is there anyone that would be interested in a solution (which I may have to produce)?
