IDS on Linux sporadic connection problems
Posted in 2005
IDS 9.40.UC7 on Linux 2.6 gave sporadic shared-memory (onipcshm) connection failures from client tools like dbschema: error -25588 "appl process cannot connect to Dynamic Server" plus errno 22 (Invalid argument), occurring intermittently while TCP (onsoctcp) connections always worked. Changing sqlhosts entries made no difference. The cause was identified as Linux's Exec Shield address randomization, which makes shmat() fail to attach at the configured address. Setting the environment variable INFORMIXSHMBASE=-1 (with SHMBASE 0x44000000 in onconfig) eliminated the errors.

Hello,
after installing IDS 9.40.UC7 on Linux (2.6.9-11 i686) for the first time
I have sporadic connection problems when running dbutilities (e.g. dbschema)
over shared memory connections:
dbschema -d <database> -t <table>runs fine several times, than it takes a few seconds and returns with
the following error message:
-25588 - The appl process cannot connect to Dynamic Server <dbservername>
22 - Invalid argument
After that the command runs fine several times again.
When setting INFORMIXSERVER to a value for a TCP/IP connection (onsoctcp)
I don't get these errors.
Does anybody know similar problems?
Is the only way to avoid these errors not to use shared memory connections?
Here some more details of my configuration:
onconfig has the following settings:
SERVERNUM 0
NETTYPE (empty)
RESIDENT 0
MULTIPROCESSOR 0
NUMCPUVPS 1
SINGLE_CPU_VP 0
NOAGE 0
AFF_SPROC 0
SHMBASE 0x44000000L
SHMVIRTSIZE 64000
SHMADD 16384
EXTSHMADD 8192
SHMTOTAL 0
onstat -g seg shows no additionally allocated shared memory segments, onlythe three segments allocated at IDS startup (resident/virtual/message).
There are no error messages in the console or message log files.
SHMMAX is set to 1000000000 therefore all shared memory segments are allocated
as one single segment each (ipcs -m shows three segments).

Are you
running NIS? What flavor of Linux?
Informix uses Unix authentication as does DB2. We have seen sporadic
connection times even if NIS is setup to look local hosts first on Linux. It
is my understanding that there is a SUSE 9 patch that just came out to help
with this problem.
