Re: OnLine on RAID - what's the truth?

Well Andy, for what it's worth : Our warehouse system runs on a Sun E5000 with HDS 5700 RAID (level 5) and in the two years it's been running i/o performance has always been excellent. Along with everyone else I've read a lot of scare stories about Informix & RAID 5 (I inherited the system from predecessors and thought about reconfiguring the RAID levels), however I've yet to be bitten by the problems bandied around - appalling write performance, etc... (I have a very large piece timber in my hand as I type this). The only real problem I have with RAID 5 is never being sure where the data physically is which puts the mockers on any smart fragmentation strategy......in practice however this is not such a big deal - we have a little 1,800,000 row, 1.2GB table which I fragmented (round robin) across 3 dbspaces and access to it is lightning-fast. I guess a lot depends on the quality of your RAID box (amount of cache/disk seek times/how well-written the s/ware is) and what type of system it's hosting. -- # Matt Pierce -----------== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==---------- http://www.dejanews.com/ Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own
