By all means make the articles Judging from your organization, you work in a scientific environment. Maybe you could provide us with a standard for "total waste of bandwidth". This is a rant I see frequently in newsgroups, but have yet to find the scientific information that shows how to determine what is wasted bandwidth, much less total waste, opposed to optimal bandwidth usage, and so on. Is there a newsgroup where this can be found? I was under the impression that newsgroups are a place where the postings can come from any contributor without restrictions on what was said, exception being generally offensive comments or material. I would like to understand "bandwidth waste" more, trying to get a better feel for it. Maybe obtaining professional software that can meter this independently of my own judgement would be a good idea as well, thus achieving totally independent monitoring of bandwidth within a newsgroup. I would also like to have a good reason to have optimal bandwidth, both in my own postings and others. It might have something to do with CPU cylces or memory requirements, but I'm not sure. This appears to be a new science, relatively speaking, if indeed it is a science. So much to learn, so little time! :-) > available somewhere (especially for those who don't live in the > good ole US of A - I assume these headlines are from US mags, I > don't recognise many of the titles, and I never see references > to articles in UK mags), but "somewhere" should be the Informix > WWW site, not here. > This is another area where I need a measurement. How do you determine what content gets posted where? Is there software for this too? I want to make sure I know where to look...where to post...I'm so confused... > This will probably turn into another 50:50 split, just like > the idea of splitting the group :-). > > Richard. I hope I didn't waste too much bandwidth, not having the software to measure this... :-) -- \\\\|// (6 6) -----------oOOo---( )---o00o------------------------------- Tim Schaefer Motorola: tschaefe@paging.mot.com Worldwide: tschaefe@shadow.net Homepage: http://www.shadow.net/~tschaefe Liberty: www.lp.org www.cato.org -----------------------------------------------------------
