Changing data structure forced command termination.

What does the error "Changing data structure forced command
termination" mean? What causes it? How do I prevent it from happening?
I get it when I run onstat:

There are actually several more users that are still connected and
functioning correctly.
I got this error before and ran "onmode -ky", but then I couldn't get
Informix to start back up. I ended up having to reboot the entire
system. When the database came back up, onstat displayed properly.
Also, when this error is occuring, running onspaces gives this error:
shared memory not initialized for INFORMIXSERVER 'ifmx_online'
I am using Informix Online 7.12 on a Sun Solaris 2.5.1 system.
Also, I have Online 7.22 and would like to upgrade to it. How difficult
is this to do? What do I need to watch out for? I need to do this on a
production machine, so how much downtime can I expect?
