Performance problem

Hi all, Thanks to Art and Jonathan for all their help. We were able to complete our project and move to production. But we found one problem there. The system seems to be very slow whenever it accesses DB. It used to work fine in the test environment but there is some problem in the production ENV. Actually we have another application which is a bactch process running on production. It uses the same INFORMIX SERVER. And it is a continuous process which sends lot of transacions to the database. When bring that process down everything seems to be normal for our process. Both the systems use different databases but still they seem to affect each other. As I said we use the same INFORMIXSERVER i.e. for these databases we have the ENV variable INFORMIXSERVER set to say "production". Can this be a problem. Can we do some thing to get our speed back without impacting the other application? We are using informix 7.20. Any help will be greatly appriciated. If possible please send a copy of your email to my id at "asharma@uswest.com". Thanks in advance. Arvind

There is your first clue. Post onstat output, including but not
necessarily limited to (I love the phrase): -c, -p, -g iof, -g iov,
-g ioq, -d, -F, the last 20 lines of the message log. I strongly suspect
that you do not have enough buffers and the two apps are swapping each
others pages out of memory, but other possibilies present themselves like
I/O contention, sharing dbspaces/chunks/disks. What is the disk farm
like (singleton drives, mirrors, stripes, RAID-whatever)? Are the two
database on the same physical/logical drives? Post anything else you
think might be relevant. Also are stats updated according to
recommendations or better? Have you used SET EXPLAIN on the queries to
see if maybe you need to adjust the queries or the schema of the database?
