Size of dbexport

At present I am trying to put together a script that accurately works out the size of a dbexport. The problems (fun and games) arrive when you start to work out the size of smallints, ints etc. (e.g. binary data). It's easy enough to work out the max. ascii size of these but this provides me with an estimate that is far to high although it is the theoretical max. value. Has any one written a script in the past to do this that they can send me. It would be very much appreciated.
