One of the main differences is in the Kernel AIO. I don't think KAIO works on block devices. Linking to character special devices will allow KAIO to work. No problem in using block devices, but if you you want to start using the character devices you may be stuck. If you are using chunks that are symbolically linked to the block devices then simply re-link the chunks to the character devices - easy. If, however, your chunks are directly opointing to the block device, then you have a bit of work to do !!
