problems with Access97 and IDS 7.30.UC3 on Solaris 2.6

Dear all, I am having the following problems with an Informix database that started life in full Access97. It consists of 2 tables, the detail one originally having no unique column or combination of columns so I have added another one ("autonum") and given it a unique number. Now, with Access just as the front end, I want to be able to add data but need the autonum field to increment by one automatically each time to let me do so. However, it appears that the ODBC driver (Intersolv 3.01) will not recognise a serial field in an Informix table, nor will it recognise a stored procedure that will carry out the process for me at the engine level. Similarly, I believe it won't work with the IDS system rowid column. Is the only alternative coding in VBA? Also, I wish to sort the data in the detail table when it appears in the Access form. Access will not do this for me in the detail, although is quite happy at the master table. Is there a way of getting Informix to carry this out at the engine level? Any help much appreciated.
